Your Council Day is the national event that celebrates local government. It's our opportunity to highlight the role that our county and city councils plays in Irish society, delivering essential services and making a positive impact for individuals, businesses and communities.

Your Council Day 2026 takes place on Friday, 26 June, and this year's theme is Supporting Communities Every Day.

What is Your Council Day?

Your Council Day is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the services and work carried out by local government in Ireland. It celebrates the role of county and city councils and the dedication of their staff. Coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) and supported by all 31 local authorities, the day aims to:

  • Highlight local authority services and achievements.
  • Celebrate the commitment of local authority staff.
  • Increase public awareness about the role of county and city councils, which have a very important and positive impact on our daily lives.

What happens on Your Council Day?

On Friday, 26 June 2026, local authorities will:

  • Share stories and content on social media using hashtags #YourCouncilDay and #DoLáSaChomhairle.
  • Highlight services, staff and community initiatives.
  • Engage with the public, councillors and community groups.
  • Host or align with local events (e.g. walking tours, consultations, celebrations).
  • Use traditional media and digital platforms to promote their work.
  • Share behind-the-scenes content, personal staff stories and innovative projects to give people an insight into local authority services and life.

Our county and city councils work closely with a diverse network of stakeholders and partners across Irish society. Elected councillors advocate on behalf of citizens, while Government agencies collaborate with local authorities to implement national policy. State bodies and non-profit organisations work with local authorities to deliver vital services, and community groups partner with councils to enhance life in both urban and rural areas.

What is the 2026 theme?

The Your Council Day theme in 2026 is Supporting Communities Every Day. Local authorities play a vital role in supporting communities across Ireland, delivering essential services and helping to shape places where people live, work and connect.

The theme is supported by five subthemes:

The services you don’t see (but rely on every day)

Many of the services we depend on every day happen quietly in the background — from keeping streets clean to maintaining roads and ensuring public safety.

Supporting communities

Local councils work closely with communities, supporting local groups, services and initiatives that help people feel connected and supported.

Planning for the future / shaping your place

Councils play a key role in shaping the future of towns and cities, helping decide how places grow, develop and meet the needs of local people.

Arts, heritage, tourism and events

Councils support cultural life, local heritage, tourism and events, creating places and experiences that people can enjoy and take pride in.

Local democracy – your council, your voice

Local government gives people a voice in how their communities operte, with opportunities to get involved in decisions that affect everyday life.

How can I participate in Your Council Day?

You can get involved by:

  • Following and engaging with your local council on social media using the hashtags #YourCouncilDay and #DoLáSaChomhairle.
  • Participating in local authority activities planned around 26 June.
  • Sharing your own stories or experiences with local council services.
  • Volunteering or collaborating with community groups supported by your council.
  • Spreading awareness about the services your local authority provides.

How does my council and local government impact upon my life?

Local government plays a big part in our everyday lives, often in ways we might not even notice. Whether it's the roads we use, the waste services we rely on, or the parks and amenities we enjoy, our local council is behind it all. Across Ireland, there are 31 local authorities responsible for delivering over 1,000 services.

These services include housing, waste management, road maintenance, emergency response, environmental protection, and support for local communities and businesses. Together, they help keep our towns and cities running safely, effectively and sustainably.

Local government also plays a key role in supporting communities every day by creating opportunities for people to connect, participate and shape their surroundings.
