Local authority parks aren't just places to have a quiet stroll or kick a ball around. They can also be hives of activity. This summer many local parks are home to festivals and markets. They are a great opportunity for some quality family time out in the fresh air, or just to get to know your neighbours better. Here's a small selection. For details on what's happening in your local area check out your local authority's website.

Parkrun

Parkrun events have been organised across Ireland for over ten years now. They allow runners to take part in free, timed 5k races every Saturday morning. What you mightn't know is that you don't have to be a runner to take part. Participants of all abilities are welcome, including walkers. You don't even need to do a lap of the course to be a part of it, as you can always volunteer as a steward. Find your nearest Parkrun at parkrun.ie.

Riverfest Village, Arthur's Quay Park, Limerick

Riverfest is Limerick's premier summer festival and it takes places every May bank holiday weekend. The full lineup of events is being finalised but there's always a tonne of family-friendly fun stuff happening all over the city, including live music, food markets, and cheering on runners at the Limerick city marathon finish line. Arthur's Quay Park, right in the centre of the city, is home to the festival village and its best place to soak up the atmosphere. For details see limerick.ie/riverfest
