This country‑wide celebration of reading brings together local libraries, reading and literacy organisations, and the Government of Ireland to highlight the joy and wellbeing benefits of taking time to read.

The campaign will build towards Ireland Reads Day on Saturday, 28 February 2026, when libraries across Ireland will host events, activities and special programmes for all ages. From picture books and biographies to audiobooks, graphic novels, travel guides, and more, your local library has something to interest every reader.

People love a good book

Despite the rise of smartphones, a new study commissioned by the Local Government Management Association (LGMA), shows that people still favour print books.  Two thirds of respondents said they prefer books on paper to books on electronic devices, and nearly 80% of respondents said they will be reading during the year.

According to Stuart Hamilton, the LGMA’s Head of Libraries Development, the results of the survey are really encouraging. Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast he said: "We all spend so much time on our phones - I think all of us are aware of that - but actually we’re still all trying to find time to get to a book."

How to get involved

Everyone is invited to join in this celebration of reading. All you need to do is pick up a good book and get lost in the story.
