Where two or more households come together to set up and manage their own wastewater system, this is a group sewerage scheme. Grants are available to those wishing to start their own group sewerage scheme covering 75% of the approved cost, up to a limit of €6,500 per domestic connection, whichever is lower.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a grant for a group sewerage scheme if you and your neighbours live in an area where there is no existing public scheme.

How do I apply?

The first step is for you and your neighbours to set up a committee so you can develop your plans for the scheme. Once the committee is set up you can contact the rural water section of your local authority to begin your application.

Once the grant is approved you must also obtain planning permission before construction begins.

How are applications assessed?

Your local authority will review the plans for the scheme to make sure that it will be constructed to a high standard and that it will work effectively.

When is the grant paid?

The local authority may make payments as construction progresses. The final grant payment is made after the sewerage scheme is complete and up and running.
