Where two or more households come together to set up and manage their own water supply, this is a group water scheme. Grants are available to help set up group water schemes in areas where there is no access to a public scheme.

How much is available?

Each local authority administers the grant scheme separately, and the total amount of grant available may vary. The grant typically covers 85% of the costs of the scheme, up to a fixed maximum amount for each house. The remaining 15% of the costs must be covered by the applicants.

How are applications assessed?

The local authority will review the application to ensure that it can reliably supply enough water for all the houses in the scheme, that the water it supplies meets the required quality standards, and that the scheme won't have a negative impact on houses on existing schemes.

When is the grant paid?

The local authority may make interim payments as the work progresses. The final grant payment is made after the scheme is completed.

How do I apply?

The first step is for you and your neighbours to set up a committee so you can develop your plans for the scheme. Once the committee is set up you can contact the rural water section of your local authority to begin your application.
