A new dog is a lot to take on. Local Authorities with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Department of Rural and Community Development have compiled a handy guide that explains what's involved so you can decide if you're ready.

Owning a dog for the first time can change your life in ways you might not expect.

Your new furry companion is going to need its own space at home, regular exercise, and the occasional — and occasionally costly — trip to the vet. Plus you're going to be responsible for your dog's behaviour, which can be challenging.

To help you decide whether now is the right time to bring a dog into your life, there's a handy guide available. Produced by local authorities in collaboration with relevant government departments, it's designed to give straightforward and clear advice about this responsibility you're thinking of taking on.

The guide is available in English and Irish language versions, and to make the guide widely accessible, it's also been translated into a number of other languages.
